SHPE Speaks! National Engineers Week, or “E-Week”, February 20-26, 2011SHPE has taken on E-Week to help drive the spirit of STEM to everyone in the community where they can discover, explore and live STEM.
All chapters - SHPE Jr., College/Grad, & Professionals - are encouraged to partner either sub regionally or locally (with other chapters / organizations / entities) and highlight STEM through out E-Week.
If your chapter is already planning an E-Week event, please:
- Post your event on SHPE's Twitter page and Facebook Group and Page
- Share your best practices, lessons learned and templates of programs with the E-Week Chair, Jimi Diaz (Jimi.Diaz@shpe.org) so that we have a strong repository of ideas for E-Week..
There are many ideas and cost-free ways to get this accomplished. The following are a few ideas of what you and your Chapter can do during E-Week:
Grassroots You can begin where you live. Whether at home, local gym, dorm room or classroom - you can help spread the word about E-Week & STEM to --- your family, neighbors, co-workers, housemates, partners, friends, children/cousins/nieces or nephews or the neighbors kids, mentees, dorm, classroom or community organizations.
You can talk about how STEM has contributed to longer living by improving health, or helping keeping family & friends united by facilitating communication either by email or VoIP services like Skype.
School Presentations Speaking at a school auditorium or classroom is a great way to share your passion for Engineering and STEM to a large audience. Enhance the talk with visual aids, demonstrations, contests and prizes. Use the links in the Resources section for ideas.
Hands on Activities Besides going to speak to an elementary, middle school or high school class about your job or careers in STEM; you can also host a paper airplane competition or building a bridge from straws competition. You can recycle activities from previous outreach events such as Noche de Ciencias, find activities in any of the links in the Resources section or go to the E-Week Webpage for more ideas.
Trips If you are able to - take a student or group for an official or unofficial tour of your company (please be sure to speak to your recruiting office or admissions office if at a University). You can also go to a local museum or science center.
