Elections

To be eligible to run for office or sign a nomination petition, a member must have paid their dues. The membership dues must be received (not postmarked by) in the National Office by February 15. A candidate may not run for more than one office.

Download the Nomination Petition from the Forms page

A candidate may submit a camera-ready copy of his/her biography with their nomination form. The biography must meet the following standards:

  • Must fit on a single-sided 8.5 x 11 sheet.
  • Must clearly state the position the candidate is running for.
  • Can be in any color or design, but will be reproduced in black and white.
  • Can contain any information or personal information the candidate wishes to disclose.
  • Can contain a picture of the candidate (please be professional).
  • Cannot contain information regarding other candidates.
  • Cannot contain any vulgarities.

The nomination petition and biography must be received by March 15 (not postmarked by). The nomination petition must be mailed to the address on the form.

Candidates may submit a web page to be included on the shpe.org web site. Only one page will be allowed per candidate. Candidates may also submit a hyperlink to their own web site. There are no restrictions on the size of a candidates private web site. SHPE will not publish the web site or hyperlink before April 7.

If a candidate fails to submit the biography and website link with the nomination petition, he/she can submit at a later date, but there is no guarantee that it will be included in the mailing of the ballots.

If a candidate wishes to send out promotional information for him or herself, other than the biography, the candidate must contact the SANC. A mailing house will be provided to mail the information to the voters, at the candidate's expense. The biography can be sent through the mail, or emailed to the election committee. If the biography is emailed, the committee will try to print out a copy on a laser printer. If the biography cannot be printed, the committee will contact the candidate to email the biography in another format, or mail it. After the committee can print out one copy, or receive one copy through the mail, that copy will be used as the master when duplicating the ballots/biographies. A candidate may send in a color biography if they wish, but they will be responsible for sending enough copies to the committee by the deadline. If enough copies of the biography are not received, the committee will reprint enough for the rest of the ballots, but will be duplicating the biography in black and white.

The number of copies of the biography that will be needed is dependent on the position. Please contact the Elections Chair to determine the number of copies required.

There is no real deadline for the candidate's web page. The web pages will not be published until the ballots are mailed out. It can be sent after the ballots are published, if the candidates so wish. The web pages may also be updated whenever a candidate sends a new version. It may take a few days to post the new versions of the candidate's web page.

Please note there is a GPA requirement for all student representative positions. For the National Undergraduate Representative, the Vice National Undergraduate Representative, and the Regional Student Representatives, candidates must have an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher and shall maintain that standing through their term. For the National Graduate Representative, the candidate must have an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher and shall maintain that standing through their term. This is stipulated by the SHPE National bylaws in sections 16.10.1, 16.11.1, and 16.12.

Write-in Candidates
A person may run for office as a write-in candidate. The write-in candidate must meet the same eligibility requirements as official candidates, except for turning in a nomination petition. Write-in candidates must have paid their membership dues by February 15. Biographies for write-in candidates will not be mailed with the ballots. Write-in candidates will not be able to post a web page on the SHPE web site. Write-in candidates may send a mailing to the voters using the mailing house, however, the candidate will have to pay for all costs involved.

Additional questions concerning write-in candidates may be sent to elections@shpe.org.
