The National Institute for Leadership Advancement (NILA) is the premier leadership training event for SHPE. NILA is unique, as SHPE, Inc. is one of only a few professional organizations to offer leadership training to its members. The conference focuses on those skills that are key factors in chapter management and career advancement.

The agenda for the NILA is designed to provide leadership training to newly-elected chapter presidents. During this intense 4-day program, chapter leaders participate in interactive workshops that teach them about team building, leadership with group dynamics, strategic planning, goal setting and project management.

NILA participants are inspired by and exposed to different perspectives regarding technical, social, political and educational issues. Seminar speakers provide activities that are designed to motivate and empower participants, while encouraging them to think outside the box and implement change. Throughout the entire conference, participants have an opportunity to build a strong national network with other SHPE leaders, and learn to maximize the benefits available to them through SHPE, their universities, chapters and surrounding communities.

In the evenings, participants meet in teams to work on a case study project which focuses on ethical issues within a work setting. Each team then has an opportunity to give a formal presentation and to utilize the tools learned during the past three days. Professionals meet to network amongst themselves and share ideas on how to improve their chapters and fully maximize their relationship with SHPE.  By the end of the conference, every professional and student chapter president will have obtained the leadership tools, future oriented outlook, enthusiasm and drive essential to being effective SHPE chapter leaders.
