 | | STAR Awards | To be considered, the candidate must meet the eligibility criteria in each description. Additional consideration will be provided to current SHPE members in good standing. All materials received become the property of the Society. Consideration may be given to returning items (such as photographs) whenever possible and feasible.
Award winners will be presented at our SHPE Conference in Philadelphia, PA on October 31 - November 4, 2007.
Jaime Oaxaca AwardThe highest national award presented by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) to a SHPE member. This prestigious award recognizes the honoree’s unselfish and outstanding contributions in the fields of engineering and science and to the Hispanic-American Community over an extended period of time.
The selfless and diligent activities and accomplishments, carried on over a period of years, demonstrate the character of the honoree, and bring honor and esteem to the Society. The recipient symbolizes, as does the namesake Jaime Oaxaca, the ideal role model for today’s youth by vocalizing aloud and continually reinforcing the fact that "it can be done."
A distinguished SHPE member, Mr. Oaxaca is currently vice chairman of Coronado Communications, a Hispanic marketing firm located in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. He has worked tirelessly for many years to promote mathematics and science education for all. Mr. Oaxaca has received numerous honors, awards, and recognition, including: Presidential appointments to scientific and educational cabinets and foundations; distinguished alumnus recognition from the University of Texas, El Paso; and many other scientific and educational awards honoring his accomplishments and dedicated community service.
The candidate must meet the following criteria: SHPE regular membership status for three (3) years; is not a recipient of this award in the last five (5) years; has repeated and continual demonstration of dedication and commitment to the Society’s growth and advancement.
Junipero Serra Awardhis very prestigious national award is presented by the Society to a person for unique and outstanding contributions in the fields of engineering and science, including management, administration and education.
Padre Junipero Serra, a renown figure among Hispanics in the settlement of the Pacific West, networked a string of missions across California. Father Serra was a zealous and courageous Franciscan missionary who traveled thousands of miles, venturing into unknown lands in the face of appalling hardships to establish the missions, bringing faith and hope to the uninitiated and unbelieving.
Junipero Serra Award recipients have demonstrated over a period of years a similar pioneering spirit and tireless enthusiasm through their innovative accomplishments, leading to the advancement of engineering and science.
Honorary Member AwardThis coveted award is presented to those whose accomplishments and extraordinarily devoted efforts repeatedly demonstrate a sincere commitment to SHPE’s goals. SHPE membership is not a requirement to be nominated for this award. This prestigious recognition will highlight the recipient’s special merits. The award carries with it an honorary SHPE membership in perpetuity. Previous honorees have included both SHPE members as well as non-members.
Hispanic In Technology Award - Government and CorporateThese two awards are reserved for Hispanic engineers or scientists who have made outstanding contributions to their field. Nominees must have either made a single significant contribution, or led a major technical project. The achievements cited on behalf of the nominee must have contributed to the field of engineering on a continuous basis. Contributions can be in design, production, management, research, or any phase of engineering that resulted in a significant industry impact. Nominees need not be well known to the engineering public at large.
Student Role Model AwardThis award is the highest award given by the Society to a SHPE Student member. The Student Role Model award recognizes the unselfish and outstanding contributions of an honoree to their SHPE student chapter and the Hispanic community while maintaining academic excellence. The honoree must be an active SHPE Student member who brings honor and esteem to the Society through academic achievement, community service, and leadership. A letter of endorsement from the nominee’s chapter board must accompany the nomination.
Professional Role Model AwardThis award is given to an outstanding SHPE Professional member. The Professional Role Model award recognizes the unselfish and outstanding contributions of an honoree to their SHPE Professional chapter and the Hispanic community. The honoree must be an active SHPE Professional member who brings honor and esteem to the Society through community service and leadership. A letter of endorsement from the nominee’s chapter board must accompany the nomination.
Company of the Year AwardThis award is presented annually to a company or agency demonstrating outstanding support (financial or otherwise) to SHPE and its programs.
This coveted award is based on the following criteria: significant, measurable and visible assistance to SHPE to meet its goals; promoting the achievements of Hispanic employees; dedication and commitment to the advancement of the Society’s growth and development; and demonstrated partnership with public schools that have a high Hispanic enrollment.
Promising Engineer AwardThis distinguished award honors an engineer who is recognized by their peers for outstanding technical accomplishments. Letters from employers, certificates or awards earned at work, and an updated resume must accompany the nomination. Nominees must not have more than three years of full-time work experience beyond graduation, excluding internships and co-operative experiences.
Educator of the Year AwardThis celebrated honor recognizes a member of academia who significantly contributes to and continually promotes Hispanic education in the engineering, science and math disciplines. Criteria to be submitted with this nomination include a description of the educational format outlining results and accomplishments, as well as the defined correlation of the program and activity to the mission of SHPE.
Corporate Achievement AwardThis eminent SHPE award is reserved for an individual with project, budget and departmental responsibilities who has made significant accomplishments in the scientific, technical or engineering arena within a corporation. The nominee’s department should have a technical basis. The nominee must have five or more years of experience in a technical field. This highly visible individual is one who has climbed the corporate ladder and achieved great success within their organization. This award is given to a corporate executive who has gained the respect of their peers by demonstrating technical expertise.
Entrepreneur of the Year AwardFormerly the "Pioneer" award, this illustrious honor is presented to a worthy Hispanic nominee who owns a minimum of 51% of an engineering firm employing 15 or more people. The honoree must have demonstrated the necessary initiative, perseverance and business acumen to create a successful Hispanic business. The firm must have programs and achievements demonstrating a commitment to its community and the firm must be at least five years old with a solid track record of financial stability.
SHPE/GEM Graduate AwardA collaborative award between SHPE and the GEM Consortium will identify and honor a recent advanced degree graduate.
