Engineering Week 2008
Cal Poly engineering students paid a visit Thursday to Santa Maria and Arroyo Grande high schools to talk teens about what it takes to become an engineer. The visits were part of a week-long outreach program in honor of National Engineers Week, during which members of Cal Poly's engineering clubs visited five area high schools, and performed demonstrations for three San Luis Obispo County fourth-grade classes. The outreach was intended to educate kids about the various areas of engineering, and to empower them with the knowledge that they can become the engineers and scientists of tomorrow.“Our mission is to open the doors of the profession to young people,” said event coordinator Lesley Telford.

The Skyline Chapter carried out presentations to students in two local middle schools and one presentation in Skyline College. Among the presentations there are: a robotic inverted pendulum, a differential drive robot with danger avoidance, a biology research about a specific plant at Skyline’s campus, 2-D first person shooting game and a one passenger hovercraft. All this projects have been made by SHPE members from Skyline College.

Regional Retreat (Post NILA session)
Region 1 will be having their retreat August 23rd, 2008 in San Ramon California. Thanks to sponsorship from Paficif Gas & Electric (PG&E) our members will be able to attend the conference for free.
This event will allow us to communicate the regional goals to all our the membership and give additional leadership training to our members. If your chapter is interested in attending please contact me.
"If you ain't one, you ain't SHPE!" is our Region 1 chant. When we attend National Conferences like NILA or the SHPE Conference, each Region has a chant. So, this is how it works.
I say: "If you ain't 1"
You say: "You ain't SHPE" (pronounced as ship. Do you get the play on words?)
We repeat this a total of three times, and there you have the Region 1 Chant!
So, say it loud and proud!
