Corporate Tours As part of this year's SHPE Conference, we have several tours being hosted by premier employers. Some of these may require that you are a U.S. Citizen, and will need to be provided with a Social Security number upon pre-registration in order to run background checks as needed. Space is limited on many tours, so please register early. All students who register will be notified, via email, no later than Nov 7th if they are placed in their tour of choice. Notification emails will have all locations and times of where to catch their particular tour bus.
In the event that any student does not get selected into their tour of choice SHPE will make every effort to place students on another tour excursion, and those students will be contacted to make one on one accommodations. Please only sign up for only one tour at this time.
All tours, except Raytheon, will take place on Thursday November 13th. Raytheon’s Tucson facility tour is scheduled for Wednesday November 12th. Students registering for Raytheon facility are hereby instructed to arrange travel to Phoenix to arrive NO LATER THAN Tuesday, November 11th.
Final registration deadline October 31st – tours may be cancelled at that time due to low interest.
| Hamilton Sundstrand - United Technologies Corporation | Description: Tour attendees will observe the manufacture, final assembly and test of electronic equipment vital to powering commercial and military aircraft. Electrical, manufacturing, and industrial engineers will take a keen interest in the tour of this facility.
Interested in seeing what engineers do in a 170,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility. Come see UTC and tour our Hamilton Sundstrand facility where electric power generation, auxiliary generators, power conversion and management products are manufactured for major commercial and military aircraft. Attendees will also receive a presentation on Hamilton Sundstrand and UTC by a senior UTC executive.
United Technologies Corporation (UTC) is a Fortune 50 global technology company with a long history of pioneering innovation in aerospace, aviation, helicopter design, climate control, elevator design and hydrogen fuel cells. Hamilton Sundstrand, a UTC company, designs and manufactures aerospace systems for commercial, regional, corporate and military aircraft, and is a major supplier for international space programs.

| | Arizona Public Service (APS - Star Center Tour) | Description: Guided tour of Ocotillo Natural Gas Power Plant and Solar Testing And Research (STAR) Center. The group will be split into two groups of 25 people each. One group will tour Ocotillo from 8:30am to 9:30am while the other group tours the STAR Center. The groups will then switch and tour the other facility from 9:30am to 10:30am.
Facility: The twin boilers at the Ocotillo Power Plant tower more than 13 stories high making it a significant landmark in Tempe. Located at Mc Clintock and University drives, Ocotillo has a generating capacity of 220,000 kilowatts. The natural gas/diesel oil fired plant was completed in 1960, and at the time was one of APS' largest generating plants. Two combustion turbines were installed in the early 1970s to increase the plant's total capacity to about 330,000 kilowatts. Ocotillo is the site of the APS Solar Test and Research Center, which is one of the premiere Solar Testing and Research Centers in the world, where APS helps develop and test the newest technologies for converting the sun's energy into electricity. APS’ goal and purpose for the STAR center is to learn how to produce the lowest cost electricity from the sun using current and emerging solar technologies.
Tour Restrictions: - Closed-toe hard soled shoes must be worn (tennis shoes are fine);
- No sandals, CROCS, flip-flops or slippers. If non-acceptable shoes are worn, at our discretion that person(s) will not be allowed to be a part of the power plant portion of the tour
- Hard hats must be worn at all times in designated areas and earplugs will be worn when the Ocotillo Power Plant is in operation (we will provide both)
- All visitors must stay with the APS guides and failure to follow their directions will lead to a termination of the tour

| | Arizona Public Service (APS - Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station Tour) | Description: Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station is the nation's largest nuclear generating facility and the largest power producer in the U.S. — no power plant, of any type, produces more electricity on an annual basis. The tour will include a visit to the site’s Energy Information Center, a driving tour of the massive site and opportunities to interface with some of the hundreds of engineers who work at Palo Verde.
